How To Operate A Gas Fireplace

When the chilly weather sets in it’s always nice to warm up your home by turning on your gas fireplace. A gas fireplace can provide the warmth and comfort of a traditional fireplace without needing to use wood to keep the fire burning. They typically vent outside, to keep the air in your home clean and free of carbon monoxide.

Understanding how to operate your gas fireplace is important, so you can get all the benefits during the colder months.

Check the Gas Fireplace Series Manual

Reviewing your gas fireplace manual is the most effective and safest place to start learning how to operate your gas fireplace. Prior to lighting or adjusting your fireplace, ensure you’re doing it correctly for your model. This is the best way to avoid any accidents or injuries.

If you have misplaced your manual, don’t worry many manuals are available online or simply get in touch with the fireplace manufacturer, such as Napoleon.

Try/Use the Gas Fireplace Wall Switch

Many gas fireplaces nowadays have a wall switch that can easily allow you to turn your gas fireplace on or off. It may also allow you to adjust the level of the flame. If it does not light, you may need to manually light the pilot by using the steps outlined below.

There are two main ways to operate a gas fireplace:

Igniting with a Gas Fireplace Key

  1. Start by removing the fireplace's outer cover for safety reasons.

  2. Put the key into the gas valve knob (typically located to the left or right of your fireplace) DO NOT turn the key yet.

  3. Keep in mind some fireplaces may have this key already installed into the wall.

  4. Wear heat-resistant gloves while holding a long lighter or long match to the burner to ignite. Be prepared to quickly move your hand away if the pilot light ignites.

  5. Turn the key about a half-turn counterclockwise which will release gas into the fireplace and cause the pilot light to ignite with a flame.

  6. If you smell any gas, quickly open the window to air the room out, if there is a strong gas smell then exit the home and call the fire department.

  7. Place the fireplace cover back where it belongs – on your fireplace.

Lighting with a Gas Fireplace Control Panel

  1. Open your control panel to manage the pilot light. It is typically found behind the fireplace screen.

  2. Turn the control knob on if it is currently in the off position. Wait a few minutes for any of the leftover gas to exit the fireplace. Open the window to air your home out, if there is a strong smell of gas call the fire department just in case.

  3. If your fireplace has a shutoff valve, turn it until the handle is parallel with the gas line to allow fuel to enter the fireplace.

  4. Once you are ready to light the pilot, turn the control knob to the pilot position.

  5. Press down and hold the control knob and at the same time hit the fireplace ignition switch (typically the red button) until the pilot light ignites.

  6. If this doesn’t work, then retry the previous steps again.

  7. If the pilot light ignites, continue to hold the control knob down for 30 seconds or longer.

  8. Finally, move the control knob to the "ON" position from the pilot position.

  9. Place the fireplace cover back where it belongs – on your fireplace.
