Open Faced Steak Sandwich on Pane Di Casa Recipe

By: Andrea Alden

I had leftover steak from the Gourmet Steak Pizza recipe and wanted something a little heartier for lunch one day. I made this Open Faced Steak Sandwich on Pane Di Casa, initially intending it to be a full on sandwich, but as I dressed it up and was getting ready to put the top on, I just couldn’t. This sandwich was so beautiful as it was. Instead I made a couple more and served them to my husband, who proceeded to rave about them. Now the whole family is requesting them for our Fancy Family Canada Day Picnic Lunch Celebration. Okay so the event title is a bit of a work in progress, but the Open Faced Steak Sandwiches aren’t!

Ingredients

2

8oz. steaks

2 tbsp.

your favorite steak seasoning

slices of COBS Bread Pane Di Casa loaf

4 tbsp.

garlic butter

4

leaves of lettuce, washed and dried

12

button mushrooms, washed and sliced

1 tbsp.

butter

4

slices of deli style cheese

Horseradish mayonnaise for serving

Method
  1. Oil the grids and preheat one side of your grill to high – around 500°F.
  2. Season the steaks with your favorite steak spice.
  3. Place a frying pan over medium low heat and melt the 1 tbsp. butter, add the button mushrooms, stirring to coat. Allow them to fry, stirring occasionally, ensuring that they don’t burn.
  4. Grill the steaks for about 2 minutes per side, then move them to the “off” side of the grill to finish grilling for another 4 minutes for medium rare / medium doneness.
  5. Rest the steak for at least 5 minutes before slicing. While the steak is resting, butter the Pane Di Casa slices with the garlic butter and grill them, butter side down, over direct heat. Once grilled, move them to the “off” side of the grill, flipping so that the garlic side is up, and add the cheese. Melt for about a minute with the lid closed.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches with some lettuce, topped with sliced steak and fried mushrooms. Squeeze over the horseradish mayo as desired. Careful though, it packs a punch!

An Open Faced Steak Sandwich on Pane Di Casa is completely satisfying, even if you don’t have the top piece of bread. The lightness of the Pane Di Casa, the crunch of the toasty bits, the full-bodied flavor of the steak and mushrooms, and the bite of the mayo all come together to make your sandwich experience whole. I have just one question. Do you eat it with a fork, or do you pick it up?

Happy Grilling!
