BBQ Braised Pork Belly with Glass Noodles Recipe

By: Andrea Alden

I first discovered one of the main ingredients in this recipe as an appetizer. These noodles were clear, tangy, cold, and delicious. Upon discovering that they were sold in my local grocery store, I had to have them. Naturally, they needed to find their way into a barbecue recipe. This Asian-inspired, BBQ Braised Pork Belly with Glass Noodles recipe combines the tender deliciousness of grilled veggies and braised pork belly with a delightfully sweet and salty sauce for a meal that is both pleasing to the eyes and the palate.

Ingrédients

3 oz.
(1 handful, thumb and forefinger nearly touching)

sweet potato vermicelli/glass noodles

1 tsp.

sesame oil

Pork Belly

1.5 lb.

pork belly meat, skin removed

2 tsp.

salt

1 tsp.

black pepper

1 tsp.

onion powder

4 cloves

garlic, crushed

2 tsp.

ginger, grated

4 cups

apple juice

¼ cup

soy sauce

2 tbsp.

rice wine vinegar

2 tbsp.

Chinese cooking wine

2 tbsp.

brown sugar

Grilled Vegetables

1

yellow onion, sliced

1

green pepper, sliced

1

carrot, sliced

1 cup

mushrooms sliced

2 tsp.

sesame oil

Préparation
  1. Slice the pork belly into 1-inch cubes. Season with salt, pepper, and onion powder. Preheat the grill to medium, around 375°F, placing a deep-sided cast iron skillet or dutch oven over direct heat. Brown the pork belly on all sides.
  2. Once browned, carefully drain some of the rendered fat away into a heat-safe container. Place the skillet or dutch oven onto the heat once more. Add the garlic, apple juice, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, Chinese cooking wine, and brown sugar. Bring the whole thing to a boil for about 15 minutes.
  3. Turn the heat down to around 300°F. Close the lid and allow the pork belly to braise for 30 minutes. While the pork is braising, slice the vegetables into thin slices and toss with the sesame oil.
  4. After the belly has cooked for 30 minutes, it is time to start monitoring it. If the sauce has already reduced by half or more, add a little more juice. Cook the pork belly in the braising liquid until the liquid becomes thick and syrupy.
  5. Once the pork belly is nearly done, around the 30-minute mark, place a grill wok or stainless steel topper over direct heat and stir fry the veggies until they are tender-crisp and beginning to get that delicious BBQ char.
  6. Bring a pot of water to boil and cook the sweet potato noodles for 3 to 4 minutes or until al dente, then immediately drain and rinse them. Before boiling, you may want to consider breaking them in half.
  7. Open up the pork belly once more, skim off any extra fat, then stir in the noodles and vegetables, and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes.
  8. Remove the meal from heat and serve hot, topped with fresh green onion and sesame seeds.

This BBQ Braised Pork Belly with Glass Noodles Recipe is at once sumptuous, filling and satisfying. The unique texture of the glass noodles, the crispy and tender pork belly, grilled vegetables all combined with the savory sauce, makes an incredible meal that is definitely out of the ordinary.
