Do you Need to Use an AC Cover in the Winter?

Part of regular home maintenance is getting the outside of your house ready for cooler weather. Covering the air conditioner should be one of those chores. But why do you really need to cover your air conditioner for the fall and winter months?

Why You Should Consider An Air Conditioner Cover

Though your Napoleon air conditioner, the outdoor part in particular, is built to withstand harsh weather, protecting it from the elements is a great idea when you don’t need it running anymore. Why?

  • Covers offer protection from heavy debris like falling branches, icicles, and snow.
  • Covers prevent the buildup of dirt and debris inside the unit when inactive for long periods.
  • Covers can prevent water damage from snow accumulation, which after a thaw can freeze against the coils.

If you live in warmer climates, covering may not be as necessary as it is for those who live in areas that see a lot of snow and harsher weather.

What to Look for in a Cover

Not all covers are created equal. Some can be detrimental to your air conditioner’s health and longevity. When picking a cover, you want to look for ones that feature breathable materials and venting. This prevents moisture build-up and encourages airflow, which will avoid trapping moisture against any electronic parts and the rusting of the unit itself. The added airflow will discourage critters from taking refuge, building nests, and chewing wires.

Don't Forget to Take the Cover Off After Winter!

Aside from remembering to clean around and inside the unit before covering, remember to uncover your unit before turning it back on in the springtime. A handy way to do this is to turn the breaker switch that runs the unit off so you can’t accidentally turn it on before it’s been uncovered.
