Ingredients
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry
  • 1 tbsp. (8 g) all purpose flour
  • 2 large or 3 small apples
  • ¼ cup (55 g) brown sugar
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • 1 large egg yolk, beaten
  • Parchment paper
Method
  1. Preheat your barbecue to 375°F (191°C), preparing to use indirect heat.
  2. Flour a sheet of parchment paper and roll out the pastry to about 8 by 14-inches (20 by 36 cm). If the pastry came in a roll, unroll it and fold it into 3 before rolling. If it came flat and already folded, just roll it out.
  3. Once rolled out, carefully cut the edges about ½-inch (1.5 cm) leaving the opposite corners intact. Fold the cut pastry edges over to the opposite sides. (Or just roll the sides up and pinch the corners.) Place the parchment and pastry onto a baking sheet like the Napoleon Stainless Steel Pizza Pan, and into the freezer while you prepare the filling.
  4. Peel and slice the apples thinly, about ¼-inch (0.6 cm). Toss them in a bowl with the brown sugar and cinnamon to taste.
  5. Brush the pastry with the egg wash, being careful not to drip down the edges. Lay the trimmings along the edges of the pastry and brush them carefully as well. Then score a border up to ¾-inch (2 cm) from the edge.
  6. Arrange the apples inside the border that you scored. Place the pizza pan with the apple tart onto the barbecue and bake the tart for up to 30 minutes, until the edges are golden and the apples are nice and tender.
  7. Allow the dessert to cool a little before slicing and serving.

Freestyle this recipe by sprinkling with raw or turbinado sugar before or after baking. You can also drizzle with caramel sauce, top with whipped cream, ice cream and even yogurt. Sprinkle with pecans or slivered almonds. Instead of cinnamon, try allspice or nutmeg. You can even make this recipe using peaches, pears or seasonal berries instead of apples.

This fast and easy Apple Tart recipe is simple and impressive. It’s sweet, crisp and oh so satisfying. Can you believe that you made it on the barbecue?
