Sticky Sesame Chicken Recipe

By: Andrea Alden

One of my favorite weeknight meals is this Sticky Sesame Chicken recipe. Served on a bed of sticky rice, this saucy Asian-inspired recipe is comforting, tasty, and filling. We’ve taken to doubling the recipe (already done for you here) so that there are leftovers for lunch the next day. Make this yourself and see how easy it is.

Ingredients
  • 2 lb. (907 g) chicken thighs
  • 2 tbsp. Chinese five-spice powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 tbsp. sesame oil, reserve 1 tbsp.
  • 1 medium, onion, sliced thin (or ½ a large)
  • 2 cloves garlic, grated
  • ¼-inch (0.64 cm) cube fresh ginger, grated
  • ½ cup (118 ml) soy sauce
  • ½ cup (118 ml) liquid honey
  • 1 tbsp. rice wine vinegar
  • 3 tsp. cornstarch
  • 3 tsp. water
  • 2 heads boccolini
  • Rice for serving
  • Sesame seeds for garnish
  • Green onion for garnish
Method
  1. Season the chicken thighs on all sides with Chinese five spice, salt and pepper. Set aside or leave in the fridge to dry brine until you are ready to cook. This can be done in the morning, up to 8 hours in advance.
  2. When you are ready to cook, preheat your barbecue to 400°F (200°C). Meanwhile, pull out your stainless steel wok and place it onto the side burner, preheating that to medium.
  3. Wash and then toss the broccolini in 1 tbsp. of sesame oil. Season to taste with salt. Place the chicken onto the barbecue grids over direct heat along with the broccolini.
  4. Meanwhile, add most of the sesame oil into the wok. Stir-fry the sweet onion until nearly translucent. While the onion is cooking, flip the chicken and broccolini, moving the vegetables off the heat if they are cooked through or beginning to char.
  5. Once the onion is nearly cooked through, remove from the wok, add in the remaining oil and toss in the garlic and ginger, frying until fragrant, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Pour in the soy sauce, honey, and vinegar. Bring to a simmer and allow to thicken. If the sauce isn’t thickening, add a mixture of cornstarch and water, a little at a time until the sauce is syrupy.
  6. When the chicken is fully cooked and charred, add it to the simmering sauce, tossing to thoroughly coat. Add in some or all of the cooked onion.
  7. Serve on a bed of hot rice, topped with sesame seeds and green onion slices, with the grilled broccolini on the side.

This Sticky Sesame Chicken recipe is fast, easy, and tasty. Perfect for weeknights. It keeps well for leftovers the next day and eliminates deep frying for a healthier meal.
