Whistle Dog Recipe

By: Andrea Alden

While there are many explanations as to why they are called as such, the iconic Whistle Dog is an easy-to-accomplish recipe that will bring nostalgic flavors and scents to you and yours. This delightful and different dog recipe has only 6 ingredients, and 4 toppings: Bacon, green relish, white onion, and shredded cheddar. So, gather them up, get that grill going, and celebrate National Hot Dog Day in style with these iconic Whistle Dogs.

Have you ever wondered why hot dogs come in packs of 10 and buns come in packages of 8? Meat is typically packaged by weight, a package of hotdogs will weigh almost exactly a pound and the standard hot dog weighs exactly the right amount to fit 10 in a pack to reach this weight. Hot dog buns, however, are baked in rows of 4 on the trays, making it easier to package in groups of 8. That means, you will only need 4 packages of hot dogs, but 5 packages of buns to make an equal amount of buns and dogs. That’s a lot of Whistle Dogs!

Ingredients
  • 1 package (1 lb, 0.5 kg) of your favorite hot dogs
  • 10 slices bacon, we used Kurobuta Uncured Bacon
  • 1 cup (225 g) of freshly shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup (50 g) diced white onion
  • Green relish to taste
  • 10 hot dog buns, split
Method
  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high, approximately 400°F (200°C).
  2. Shred the cheese and set it in the fridge to keep it cool. Dice the onion and set aside.
  3. Butterfly the hot dogs by slicing them down the middle, but not all the way through, and opening them like a book.
  4. Lay down the same amount of bacon as you have hot dogs on your preheated grill. Cook the hot dogs and bacon for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until nice char marks have formed and the bacon is cooked through. Don’t forget to toast the buns too.
  5. Fill the toasted bun with cheese, then top with the hot dog, slide in a crisp slice of bacon, drizzle a helping of relish, and finish with some diced onion.
  6. Serve your whistle dogs with your favorite seasonal sides and a nice and frosty drink. Consider a pinot noir as a wine pairing, or an amber lager if you want a beer pairing.

Fire up the grill and bring some nostalgic flavors to your backyard with this iconic Whistle Dog Recipe! With only 4 tantalizing toppings - bacon, green relish, white onion, and shredded cheddar - you'll have a delightful and different hot dog ready in no time. Celebrate National Hot Dog Day in style and make memories that sizzle! The only question is, what do you top your dogs with?
