Easy BBQ Mongolian Beef Recipe

By: Andrea Alden

Sometimes you just get a craving. Sticky, saucy, and delicious, this easy BBQ Mongolian Beef recipe hits all of those notes that you’re craving, without having to order takeout. In fact, you can quickly and easily make this takeaway classic on your barbecue in less than 40 minutes. Serve on a bed of steaming rice with a side of your favorite seasonal veggies, and you have a meal made in heaven. This recipe uses the Napoleon Drop-In Roasting Pan, however, a cast-iron frying pan directly on the cooking grids or the Napoleon Stainless Steel Wok on your side burner will do just as well.

Farmway Foods generously provided the Philly Beef Steak used in this recipe. It is well marbled, sliced thinly, and crisps up beautifully while remaining tender when cooked.

Ingredients

1½ lbs.

thinly sliced beef, flank steak, or Philly beef steak slices

¼ cup

cornstarch

2 tbsp.

peanut oil

Rice for serving

Easy BBQ Mongolian Beef Sauce

1 tsp.

sesame oil

3 tsp.

fresh ginger, grated

2 cloves

garlic, grated

1 cup

soy sauce

1 cup

beef stock

½

lime, juiced

½ cup

brown sugar

1 tbsp.

cornstarch

Sliced red chili peppers, fresh chives, sesame seeds for garnish

Directions
  1. Remove one set of cooking grids and replace them with the drop-in roasting pan if using.
  2. Cut the pre-sliced beef to ensure that each morsel is more bite-sized unless you aren’t using beef that is already sliced. Then slice the beef as thin as possible. Toss the beef with cornstarch and set aside to prep everything else.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, beef stock, lime juice, and brown sugar.
  4. Turn on the main burners, preheating the ones below the drop-in roasting pan to medium-high.
  5. Add the peanut oil and, working in batches, fry the beef until they crisp a little on both sides. You can either move the cooked beef to the front of the grill where it is cooler or place a tray onto the warming rack to hold the cooked beef until you’re ready for it again later.
*Optional. Add another round of oil and do a second fry on the beef for extra crispiness. Make sure that you use a very tender cut of beef for this, flank steak is not ideal in this situation.
  6. Once all of the beef is cooked, add 1 more tsp. of sesame oil to the drop-in pan. Fry the garlic for a moment or two, then add the garlic, continuing to cook for another minute. Remove 1 tbsp. of the soy sauce mixture and combine it with the cornstarch. Add the remaining soy sauce mixture to the drop-in pan. Add the cornstarch mixture and allow the sauce to begin to simmer.
  7. Add the beef back in (or just move it from the front of the pan) and allow everything to simmer for about 3 minutes or until the sauce gets nice and thick.
  8. Serve the beef over a bed of fresh and steamy rice, topped with chili pepper slices, sesame seeds, and/or fresh snipped chives. Don’t forget your favorite seasonal veggie too.
