How to Prepare your Furnace for Winter

We’ve been incredibly lucky and the weather hasn’t been too chilly yet, however, they’re always saying that Winter Is Coming. That couldn’t be more true in North America. That being said, it’s time to ensure that your furnace is ready to ensure your comfort for the chilly months ahead. Remember to do this a few weeks before winter sets in.

How to Prep your Furnace for Winter

  1. Have a professional come in to perform an HVAC maintenance check. This can include

    1. Ensuring all of your components are clean and in good working order

    2. Oiling the motor and bearings

    3. Changing filters – this is something you can do as a homeowner.

  2. Have your ducts professionally cleaned. Whether or not you have been using your furnace or air ducts all year, it is generally a good idea to have your ducts cleaned by a professional at least once per year.

  3. Check your carbon monoxide detectors, ensure they have fresh batteries. While you are at it, check your fire alarms too.

  4. Before turning on your heating unit make sure that the output is free of debris, obstruction, and animal nests.

  5. Now it is time to turn on the furnace. Set your thermostat a few degrees higher than the current temperature to initiate the furnace activation. Check your vents for heat output and air movement.

  6. Finally, reprogram your thermostat to ensure your daily comfort and the efficiency of your heating system.
